Showdown in Washington
Co-sponsored by USAction and the Coalition on Human Needs
After Election Day we will all turn our full attention to the looming fiscal showdown in Washington. With so many moving parts, it is essential that progressives have a unified message and story to tell. One that makes the stakes clear to the nation in our terms. And one that allows each progressive formation and group to raise their issues of greater concern while supporting other progressive efforts and avoiding conflict with them.
To that end, many groups have come together on common message and policy principles. We are inviting you to join a webinar to present those and we urge you to invite your partner and affiliate organizations and leaders around the country to participate as well.
The story is told under a compelling narrative about the economy and the details are just enough to give people what they need to tell our story, without being overwhelmed by policy.
This is a showdown between two visions: prosperity for working families and the middle-class or more for millionaires and CEOs. Congress needs to act by early next year to avoid a double-dip recession and millions more out of work. But NOT by the end of the year - it's not a cliff.
1) End the Bush tax breaks for the richest 2%
2) No benefit cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security
3) Prevent cuts in the safety net for low-income people and protect vital services for working families
4) Good jobs for America - not cuts
DANGER: GRAND SWINDLE
The so called "Grand Bargain" is actually a Grand Swindle to cut security for working families and the middle class and protect tax breaks for the super rich and CEOs.
